Because it itches and instead of digging the finger in and messing up the hair, they pat it instead. This doesn't completely relieve the itch but it helps some. If you notice they pat it gently making sure not to mess it up cuz afro hair is very hard to maintain.

Usually because they are trying to fix their hair in a certain style. You have no idea what most blacks have to go through to get their hair right. Black women rarely have long hair because they put all kinda heat and chemicals in it so it looks ok and straight to white people... the people with the jobs. A fro isn't natural either, it takes a lot of work to maintain it. So when it isn't shaped right too much force will make it uneven.

I personally have dreads, and in corporate America I too have to be very careful with my hair and make sure it is always neat. So you might see me scratch with a pinky nail or place a specific dread in place, this is so I am accepted in my workplace though.

I had an African American roommate once. She always had her hair braided and she would pat her head because it itched. She did not want to scratch because she would mess up her braids, which cost a lot of money, but are extremely pretty.

Braids, weaves, cornrows, locks, etc all can itch like crazy. If you really scratch at it you run the chance of pulling out hairs. The patting helps the itch.

I only do that when I have my hair braided because scratching causes the braids to mess up. so if you see someone doing that, it will usually be a black female with a weave.

Really is it all black people ? Why are you being so racist ? They have chemical in thier hair when its braided that makes it itch, and you can't scratch it because the braids will come out.
