I had just learned that cyan, magenta, and yellow are the subtractive primaries. Why are red and blue called primaries?

red yellow and blue are root colors from which all colors derive, cyan is an ink color and magenta is a combination of blue and red. Understand that red , blue and yellow in their pure forms don't exist in nature so to get a full range of colors you are stuck with pigments which are available hence cyan (blue) magenta (purple) and yellow.

Red , yellow and blue are the primaries when an artist is working with paint on a canvas.

Cyan, magenta and yellow (amber?) are the primary colors used in film making. They are subtractive because the film is transparent and as the light from the projector's arc lamp passes through the film, the other colors are subtracted.

Red, green, blue is the standard for color television because those are the colors of the phosphors. In a color television, the green phosphor will make yellow.

There are four main primary colours
Red, Blue, Yellow And Green.

Out of these four Red, Blue and Yellow are the basic colours.

All other colours and their hues can be made out of these three.
