Does anyone know of anything that I can put on our yard to either kill or run off ticks? It needs to be pet and child friendly.
Tonight I found a tick on my daughter (3 1/2) and I am sure that she must have gotten it off the dog. I am planning on going to the vet and getting something to keep them off the dogs - but we live on 16 acres and I don't think that will be enough to keep them off the kids, especially since the weather is getting nice and the kids will be playing outside alot.
I just need something to treat the area where the dogs go and the kids play. Thanks for all the help.

The problem with ticks is they climb trees as little babies, and hang on the underside of low hanging branches, waiting on your children, deer, or dogs, etc to come by, and they drop off the tree and land on them. They also climb tall grass strands and do the same thing. I am assuming you have a nice, large lawn which somwhere nearby you have a treeline leading to the rest of your property which is probably a wooded area? Here's my suggestion: Keep the whole entire grassy part of your property mowed down to at least 2 inches... Don;t let it get tall. Keep the kids away from the treeline. The dog might be a different story, but you said you were gonna get him some meds. I lived on a big property like that for a while, and one time I walked under this wild magnolia tree and as I walked away from it, there were about 100 baby ticks all through my hair and all over my arms... *shiver* You can try the granules and stuff from your local lawn anf garden, but with 16 acres, your gonna pay a bundle, and then they will just come back next year. Your best bet with all that property is to be proactive.

If you dont mind having a very decorative bird in your acres, guinea fowl love ticks. The birds are very friendly, gorge theselves on ticks, do not scratch the ground like chickens. Your kids might enjoy the birds and they will definately clean up ticks. I know of nothing else natural that takes care of ticks and cant figure out why in the great outdoor plan ticks were created.

Walmart carries a product that will kill fleas and ticks as well as other insects it is about $13.00 a bag and it will say on the bag that it kills fleas and ticks as well as other insects, I think a bag covers about 5,000 sq. ft. I would put it on a little heavier the first go around, we have dogs and have used t his product and it works well and is kind of a time release product.....it has been two years since we treated our yard and so far no more ticks and very few fleas. Wish I could give you the brand name, but like I said on the bag it will specify that it kills fleas and tick. Good luck

Try going to an organic nursery. They have a variety of fertilize and insect repellents that are safe for animals and children. You can also do a search on organic or organic natural tick repellent so that you have an idea of price and what you want to ask for.

I think I'd consult a professional. It's not worth contracting lyme disease...
