Check out the ridiculous, crude, vulgar and totally insensitive commercials the fast food chain Carl's Jr. has had over the past years. They're a great resource for insutling advertising. They had Paris Hilton doing a porn dance while washing a car and eating a hamburger.
You might also consider the Geiko Cave Men commercials. They're funny and even the most dense person can get the irony of the message.
Try watching a few commercials with a paper and pen and take some notes. Pick a coupe examples and write why you find them controversial.
Good luck!

Someone already suggested this but I want to emphasize it.
The Geico caveman commercials.
At first it made sense "so easy a caveman can do it"
But now they have got off on a tanget and have stopped using the motto for the most part.
What they are doing is making fun of oppression.
The psychiatrist commercial and Especially the news commercial are prime examples.
Or what about the Jack in the Box commercial. The one where the guy orders like 40 tacos. They are implying he is high (from marijuana) and glorifying it.
Oh and a great one. These are commercials that actually got pulled off the air. The car crash commercials. They were so sudden and graphic that the creators first had to show them after 9pm and then had to take them off altogether. Volkswagen commercials.

I HATE condom ads, erectile dysfunction ads, etc.... When you have children, they ask what the commercial is about and it isn't appropriate. It makes my 16 yr old just as uncomfortable as it makes me to have that come on while we are watching tv (I'm the mom) When he was younger, he would ask what the commercial was about. I didn't want to lie to him but at the same time, I didn't always think he was mature enough to understand the subject matter at times. It helps to take away the innocence that children once had. (not blaming everything on ads but they are a contributing factor) Sexy ads promote sexuality at a young age. Sex=popular=success in life. Not a realistic view of how life really is. Some ads (constipation, etc...) I don't want to know about while I am eating my snack enjoying a show. Also - the Superbowl candy bar ad where 2 guys are biting from both ends and end up kinda kissing......many people were upset about that ad from both sides. Christians felt it promoted homosexuality while others felt it put a stigma and bad light on homosexuality.

Beer/alcohol commercials of any sort (ie those with scantily clad women), or Paris Hilton's fast food commercial. You get the idea, these kinds of commercials are controversial.

The ads (lots of them) that use BABIES.
(1) is it fair to babies who are used as actors with-out their knowledge to lump these ads on them later. Like your nude baby photos for ALL the world to see.
(2) Are we then creating the concepts of STEREOTYPES on a basic child
e.g. Car ad - a male baby ,in blue nappy, with glasses drives car. Picks up female baby, in pink nappy, and bow in hair. Goes to beach where male baby surfs, while female baby claps. Male baby drives home very fast.
This ad makes me sick. Can't society at least let babies be just that babies, before we add stereotypes. Bad effect on toddlers who see these ads and absorb the stereotypes.
