I guess you could, but what kind of go kart are you building? It would seem that a 3-5 HP horizontal shaft 4 cycle engine with a centrifugal clutch would be plenty

There was a guy years back at one of the flat tracks I raced at that had put a Honda 350 engine in a go cart. The shifting is pretty easy to set up also. He just took the shift lever and moved to the vertical position and then hooked a simple linkage from that to a hand shifter. I think the clutch would be a little trickier.

yes it can be done,back in 1974 i put a Honda 750 engine on a go kart to race at the track with,and it won almost every race we ran with it,we made all the linkage for the shifter and everything,its a lot of work, but a fun one to drive when its done,it gets a little wicked though around 50 mph,but there a lot of fun,you can do it,set down and look at it and start cutting and welding,anything is possible these days,good luck with it.

yeah you can and it is cool after you do it it's super fast just make sure you save some money for new tires.
