Because they lead women to believe that they have tremendous emotional depths and if only she can unlock and nurture the great man inside him, he could become a great artist or revolutionary. I personally prefer men who work for a living.

Many women are attracted to the derelict type, the societal outcast with a worldly charm. These kind of guys, although not pillars of the community, are usually never boring! They live life on the wild side and women get caught up in it for its excitement. Guys who are straight as an arrow are better human beings, but they don't always have great personalities. We love the ones we shouldn't. The perfect man would be someone like James Dean but with a college education and a sense of responsibility!

Because they "think outside the box." I think a lot of women are tired of the box. It's intriguing and exciting to us to run across someone different and unconventional.
