Atheism is not similar to evolution. Atheism is the disbelief in Gods. Evolution is a process of change that occurs in genetic material in the natural world. The two often pop up in the same conversation because evolution provides an alternative explanation to counter the intelligent design arguments often used by those who believe in a deity.

Intelligent design argues, the existence of an all powerful, all knowing, all seeing intelligent being, with the power to create a world, such as we live in, provides the best explanation for the apparent unity, cohesion and complexity in how the natural world functions. Evolution by natural selection provides an alternative explanation to account for the apparent unity and complexity in the natural world. Evolution argues all living things descend from the same point in the distant past, a common ancestor, and via a process of reproduction and slight mutations over billions of years have resulted in the complex diversity we have today amongst living organisms. Thus the sophisticated intricacies of the world can be explained without the need to invoke divine intervention. Hence the atheist's endorsement of the evolutionary explanation.

Evolution is supported by overwhelming evidence, intelligent design has no evidence and relies on inference and faith. Also, evolution has no opinion on the existence of a God. It is a scientific discovery restricted to the natural world. Some believers try to reconcile evolution and creation and some just dismiss evolution, atheists will typically say the two are irreconcilable.

I can't give sources but in my opinion they're similar because they both deny the existence of a divine creator. They assert that things are the way they are just because and that there is no master plan behind it or any real rhyme or reason beyond convenience and necessity.

It isn't. Evolution is a process. Atheism is a belief...or a non-belief.
