To day my friend told me that someone broke into both her aunt's houses who live like a mile apart. The weird thing is nothing was taking from either of the houses. So why would someone break into a house for no reason?

It depends on what happened. If everything in the house was messed up but still nothing was gone then he/she was looking for something. If the house wasnt messed up then he/she wanted someone and found them not home so they left.

Maybe the burglars didn't find anything they wanted to take or maybe they changed their minds after getting inside?

If they have burglar alarms, it's possible they heard the alarms go off and left for fear of being arrested.
