I agree with most of the other answers. However, I would say, that you should probably wear the type of shoes that you would usually wear in class, or for whatever style you are doing. Every shoe feels different. You need to work on getting a feel for what you will be doing most often. Socks really aren't the best. One of the other answers mentioned pulling the socks down so that the heel is exposed. There are also socks that are made to only cover half of the foot. Discount dance has some socks made specifically for working on pirouettes. http://www.discountdance.com/frame_set.php3?mf=/dancewear/page_SHOE_p1.html.

Plain flat ballet shoes are best, because that's what you'll use eventually anyway. But if you're having a hard time, try a sock over just the front half of your foot OVER your shoes, on only the foot on which you are turning. The foot with which you are doing the most pushing off should wear a ballet shoe to prevent slipping, and the heel of your turning foor is left uncoverd by the sock so if you DO slip, you can put your heel down to try to help catch you.

everyones answers are good. like everyone else wearing socks isn't the best idea. For me it depends on what kind of floor I'm dancing on. The studio that I train at has marley floors and I wear jazz shoes that have a rubber sole with suede around the ball of the foot. The give the perfect amount of grip without hindering multiple turns.

I would deffinately not use socks, yes they are easier to Pirouette in, but it will not help you develp the muscles and balance pointes you will need to do the turn properly. I would recoment Canvas ballet shoes, they are the easiest to turn in and still make your body work to do 3 rotations, they are also relatively cheep, (I got a pair for $12 at discountdance.com) Also i would recomend jazz or lyrical shoes, the soles of those shoes take a while to work in before you can turn to your potential, which will be good to help you develpe your technique.
I hope this helped.....

don't wear socks!! just like everyone else said about slipping and falling and stuff. but also, wearing socks or being barefoot when you dance all the time isn't good either. my friend either wore socks or went barefoot, and it screwed up her feet because she didn't have any arch support. so... but i either dance in pedinis (a specific kind of jazz shoes), regular jazz shoes, or foot undeez. or, if you have to dance in socks, wear half-socks so you have some traction. you can buy these at kohl's or wal-mart usually.Ballet shoes are great too, especially canvas ones. those are my favorite. good luck!!

i usually wear jazz shoes or foot thongs ... also i go barefooted a lot to get better ... if you want your feet to be able to turn on any kind of floor then this is what i do ... go outside and get on the concrete (a rocky surface) and dig your foot into the ground and turn it and then try doing some pirouettes ... yeah crazy and it does hurt really bad but now i can turn on any kind of floor ... but dont wear socks on wood floor because you can slip and fall (i sprained my ankle doing it)

like sweet da... said, socks are dangourous cuz they slip. they don't gove you enough friction when you turn and you could actually pull one of the muscles in your ankle (or even tear one of them) (ouch)
always go with shoes that were made for the sprot. jazz or ballet shoes will definately work best. you can always get them at the cheapest rate at www.discountdance.com
The company's name is Discount Dance Supply, so that might be the wrong web address. you can always type it into google.

its not a good thing that you slide in socks. use jazz shoes, foot paws (cheap @ dance stores) or anything. you could slip and fall in socks. do them barefoot sometimes (NOT WHEN YOUR FEET ARE SWEATY) to get better. remember to spot + find your center :-D
good luck â¥

I say go with shoes or if you can't get that barefooted but if you have to wear the socks so it doesn't cover the heel.
