this may be a stupid question but I've heard the term "The Don" associated with the mob/mafia but what exactly is it/him?

to give you an example..

they are.. or were (dont know if they still exist) 5 different mob families in New York.. all 5 families have names .. such as:
1. The Bonanno Family
2. The Colombo Family
3. The Genovese Family
4.The Luchese Family
5. The DeCavalcante Family

each family has between 80 - 200 members/mobsters called soilders. under each family there is 1 boss, 1 underboss and 1 Consigliere (counsler) ... it would be the same as saying.. most business have a Boss, a manager and a secretary. Under those 3 fall all the soilders. so.. in all the families there are 5 mob bosses, 5 underbosses and 5 consigliere..

now the Don would be the top boss.. of all 5 families.. he's above everyone.. kinda like the owner of a business
