If you qualify for WIC benefits, many states will provide you with a pump (or "free" rental voucher) once your baby is born. You might be able to try one out before buying, that way. I think the free rental is generally short-term (6 weeks) anyway, maybe longer if you're working outside the home.
Skip the cheap hand and battery-operated pumps completely. Those are only good for basically siphoning off the excess when you're engorged. And for that, you can hand express! The only brands I've ever recommended are Medela, Ameda-Egnell, and the higher-end Avent electric.

For that matter, if you learn to hand express and find that you can efficiently empty your breasts that way, it's FREE!! It took me a while with my first baby, but I found eventually that hand expressing was easier and more effective than any pump (for *me*-- every woman's body is different). My body just never liked the pump much, no matter how expensive or well-designed. I even had a Medela Pump-in-Style for a while, and got maybe 2-3 oz. TOTAL after 30-40 min. of pumping. When I could get 6+ oz. hand expressing both breasts in 10-15 min.
Here is a link for a great explanation of how to hand express milk (the Marmet Technique):

Best of luck!

I loved my Medela Pump in Style. It was powerful enough that I was able to pump exclusively for months on end without a problem. It stored in a handy backpack, easy for transporting it. It was worth it for me to buy an extra set of funnel attachments and bottles, so I didn't have to wash them several times a day. I think you can find the accessories at places like Babies R Us. The pump was a bit pricey, but in my case my insurance paid for nearly all of it. Check into that and ask your hospital's lactation consultant before you pay for one out of pocket.
As the motor and the tubes shouldn't ever contact any bodily fluids, it might be worth looking into a second-hand one if your insurance won't pay. As long as you replace the parts that touch your body or your milk, there shouldn't be a problem with a used one.

I used a medela pump in style breastpump. It is a great breastpump. one of the better ones that helps bring your milk in and can keep up a good milk supply even when not nursing you baby.
Its about $300 but I have seen them being sold used and you can either sterilize the attachments or buy new ones.
If you just need something for once in a while I would get a small hand pump, even though your hand gets really really tired. they are pretty cheap

Medela Lactina is the kind I used for both my kids. I rented it from the hospital for $30 a month. Thats alot cheaper than buying one in case things don't work out. But if you want to buy, I recommend Medela Pump and Style. Good Luck
