Anyone think drug addicts and alcoholics are scum?

Honestly, yes. People don't have drugs forced into them, they choose to take them. It's their own fault.

They need help.
I heard of a girl who was abused by her father for years, she then turned to drugs. And now she's in rehab.
Sometimes they have emotional problems, they try to heal their wounds with these drugs.
Also, other times, people are forced to take drugs.
For example, pimps make their prostitutes take drugs, so that they will have to depend on him to get the "stuff". So that they won't run away.
It's bad.
And then there are peers. You want to fit in, so you try it out. Next thing you know, you are addicted.

They are not scum, they are people with problems. Everybody has problems.

No. They're just people who have problems and need help. Many are good people who made some bad choices and then found themselves slaves and prisoners of a substance. When I think of scum I think of hatemongers and warmongers and people who murder, rape and do other evil things. I've known alot of wonderful people who have substance dependence problems. My best friend's mom was the nicest, kindest person you could meet. She drank heavily, daily for many years. She had enough, went to treatment and stayed sober for 10 years before she passed.

This question can only be answered on what your definition of scum is. I will answer it based on my own interpretation of the slang for scum. Yes, many are. Also many are also the most productive members of society.

They are just people who have made bad choices. We all make bad choices but some are easier to be seen by the naked eye. Some are scum, but that can be said of any group of people.
