I live about half an hour away from this place called Miwok Stables, I think i might try out lessons here but im not sure. I have been interested in taking lessons for awhile.

heres their website:

How does it look? Any comments from somebody who knows a lot about horses / taking lessons? Does this place look like it might be good for jumping and stuff like that?

Watch them give lessons and talk to some of the students. When watching the lesson, make sure everything looks safe and the instructor is paying attention to the riders, not talking on the phone or doing other things. Just make sure you feel comfortable with everything there and if so, give it a try.

From the site, it looks pretty good. A good sign is that most pictures show people wearing helmets which is a small indicator that they pay attention to safety.

Things you can ask over the phone are also important in the whole scheme of things is:
Do they teach terminology?
Do they teach how to tack?
Do they teach ground manners?
Do they teach general horse care / maintenance?

Take at least one trip out to the stables (call to make an appointment so the teacher can take some time to explain what is going on if you have questions) to watch a lesson, meet the horses and see if you like the environment. If you don't like the place or the people, it's hard to stay interested.

Looking at the class schedule, they cover quite a bit, but as the other poster said, start slow and on western so you get an idea of how to handle the horse. Riding english takes quite a bit of knowledge and control and having general riding knowledge will get you much farther faster than if you tried to rush right into english for dressage or jumping.

Good luck!

Find out about it first. Ask if you can go there and see the place and check it out. Then ask questions about the horses. Then find out how much it is for lessons. Just to let you know I have taken riding lessons and I started of with the basics. I learned how to clean the stables and feed the horses and then I learned how to brush the horses. etc. It depends on the teacher who is going to teach you what to do. I had lessons for 3 years and I learned a lot from it. To let you know that it looks good but you can't tell by the pictures. Go there and look for yourself. Make sure the place is clean and the horses are not handled the wrong way. I have been around Horses for a long time. Learn from the basics first and then build yourself up to the jumping and the other things . It is fun to learn to ride but it takes a lot of learning. I have been thrown off a horse twice and I got back up on the horse and I did not turn away because if you do that the horse will not trust you and you will not trust the horse. My family members have horses and they are still learning about them. It takes a lot of patience.

Jumping is the hardest sport with horses i have ever done! It takes so much time before you accually start jumping! i am just at two feet now but am still going. Western is so much better to start off with because it is a piece of cake. i started western when i was five and i am trying jumping and still get sore! good luck though
