My i pod got stolen out of my house a week ago. I waited to see if it would turn up but it still hasnt. Only my family and close friends have been over. I am going to report it stolen, but how will that help? Is there any way apple could contact me if someone plugs it into another computer? Like the serial number will set a flag off to them and then they can contact me and then i will take care of it with the owner of the computer that accessed it. I dont want to press theft charges against someone close to me. Anyone who has lost an i pod what did you do? Or what efforts did apple, or the police do once you reported it stolen?

hi jazzle! that really stinks about ur ipod - i feel ur pain. apple's advice is to contact ur local law enforcement authority :( not a big help from apple - you'd think they could track the serial # from itunes - i agree with you: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300066

but here is a link to a macforum with some other ideas - u might start searching ebay for ur model, and make inquiries on matching products asking for the serial number: http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-162262.html

in the meantime, my vids will cheer u up! please subscribe to my FREE video podcast on iTunes: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=183309259

A friend of mine lost his iPod. I told him to email Apple and see if they could do anything, since they keep track of what computers the iPod is plugged into (which systems it is allowed to get music from, etc.).

Apple wrote back and told him they don't have any sort of "tracking service" for theft purposes, etc. and to contact the police if he wanted to file a theft report.

All the police will do for you is file a report and if it shows up, they'll notify you. But, they are not going to scour the streets for your iPod.
