Fitzgeralds is fine, the rooms are clean, they have a lot of low limit gambling. It's also the tallest hotel in downtown so if you get a room on an upper floor facing south you have a nice view of the strip lights.
Larry G Jones - "The Man of 1002 Voices - Puts on a great show, and it's a bargain at $22, IMHO he's as good as Danny Gans($100)
My favorite hotel to stay/play/eat is Main Street Station

MSS has the best(lunch-dinner) buffets for the money in Las Vegas. The Pullman Grille is the best "moderate" price steakhouse in LV and the Triple 7 Restaurant & Brew Club is a very nice place. >For some reason their breakfast buffet is just so-so< MSS is not a long walk from Fremont Street, it's maybe 2 minutes and you're inside the whole time except to cross Ogden Ave. There is a covered "sky bridge" connecting MSS to the California hotel, you walk out the front door of the Cal cross Ogden, then walk right in the door of Vegas Club hotel which is on Fremont.
If you can be flexible with your vacation you can save a lot of money. The rates are "generally" very low from May 28th until June 22nd - then again from July 15th to the 27th.

Last October, we stayed at the Plaza, rates were good, room was ok, bed was comfotable, hotel was quiet, staff was courteous, check in and out were very quick, and I'd stay there again any time, could look right down onto Fremont St. from our room. and they have a Pool too, although we didn't use it. I read lots of bad things about the Hotel and was really worried before arriving, but found nothing to complain about except the art work in the room...but who cares about the art work? However, my daughter and her significant other stayed at Fitzgerald's and paid a little more for the room there, and I went up to look at it....it was a nice comfortable room, and the hotel was clean, location was good, thought the air conditioner was a little loud, but room was nice...I'd stay there, but don't eat there..food was overpriced, not that great and we waited almost 2 hours for our food, and they weren't that busy! Rolls were great though! We go to Vegas to gamble and eat good food....so reasonable room rates allow us more $$ to spend other places! I love downtown, and could care less about staying on the strip! Take a taxi if you want to go to the strip, it's fast and $20 each way....usually still cheaper than the price difference of a room on the strip!
