The number four, which sounds like the word for 'death', is an unlucky number. To leave your chopsticks sticking out of your rice bowl is unlucky, since it looks like the standing incense that are burned at a funeral or a shrine. Also, you are not supposed to look at the photograph of a person who has died and whose body and photograph are displayed at a funeral ceremony.
