In New Jersey you have to let the attendant pump your gas. That means that every gas station has at least one person to pump gas causing their overhead to be substantially higher.

I just drove through NJ, as well as WV, PA, MD, MA, CT and NH and New Jersey had the cheapest gas prices of them all. How is this possible without there being some sort of a gas-pricing scam going on?

Because New Jersey is the arm pit of America.

It's fairly simple. For example, Tennessee has no state
income tax but we have a high sales tax. In New Jersey,
the gas tax may be low, but you can bet your house that
the tax rate on other things there easily makes up the
difference.

The circumstances in every state dictate
which tax is the highest and which tax is the lowest.
Consider the amount of commuting that probably takes
place in New Jersey and surrounding states. I would think that the low gas tax is to attract consumers. A high tax
would simply encourage commuters to drive a few more
miles to another state to fill up thus losing revenue.

They have a lot of refineries there, and lower state gas tax, so there is a savings on transportation and state taxes between production and the pump.

Lack of business maybe?? NJ is pretty small and you'll never use a tank of gas to go through it.. :-) Joking...

Lower state tax and demand for gas is not as high as in other areas like California because not there are not as many residents.

Because everyone here is too stupid to realize it. And the smart ones keep quiet and pay the lower price.

Don't know for sure but if I had to guess I would say it's because of lower taxes on it there.
