I've scanned with AVG anti-virus and anti-spyware, and also with Microsoft Defender, and no viruses ever come up on my computer, yet it is still slow. It takes a couple of minutes for applications to load (Internet Explorer, Microsoft Word, ect). I've de-fragged, and that hasn't done anything to make it less slow. I've also closed down the background apps I don't need. Is there anything else I can do to try to make it run faster?

There is only a few more things you can do.

1 more ram.

2 keep your free space lower than your used space on your hard drive.

3 Virtual Memory should be set to 2048 top and 4096 bottom, for XP.

There are a few good places to check the maximum amount of ram your system will hold.
I know of one.> http://www.techdepot.com on the left when you get there is a memory finder. follow the link and put your system info in and it will tell you the kind and the max. amount yours will hold.

Buying and installing ram will help to increase the loading time of applications, but you there are also a number of things you can do.

You can download a Startup Control Panel program that will allow you to see which programs start up when you log on to your Windows account.

This will help to let you know if there are programs such as spyware that are useless and just using up your memory.

You can also use the taskbar to identify everything thats running to determine which programs you should remove from the startup control panel or delete permanentely with the Add/Remove panel located in the Control Panel.

I make a habit of backing up any information I find important and starting from scratch by formatting the hard drive and installing windows again. I would only recommend this option if you know your way around with computers.

Otherwise search around. Like I said there are a number of other things you can do and always a list of programs to download that will help as well (www.download.com)

Some way to make your PC faster:

Disable some start up programs
Start Menu -> Run -> then type msconfig, i suggest you disable ALL of them, it wont cause a problem

Buy a new RAM, 512 RAM or more

Defrag your disk
Start Menu -> Accesories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter

Keep free space on your HD, each HD may have free space approx. 15%

Clean your registry, registry contains files created by software to comunnicate with windows or other software. I suggest Tune Up Utillities and CCleaner ( CCleaner.com its freeware! ). Unused registry will slown down your PC.

Use windows clasicc themes
Right click on desktop -> Properties -> choose windows clasicc for appearance ( It 10 mega less memory consum than XP appearance, 3 mega more if you disable the desktop background ). Dont use ANYTHING to enrich your PC visual ( themes, cursor, screensaver, docker, etc) it needs a lot of RAM.

Two things, did it run faster when you first got it. Unless you put some new hardware in your computer , its not going to get any faster then when it was new. And how old is it, more then 3 years and expect it to be slow when running todays programs.

NOTE: With the internet , your connection speed has the most affect on how fast web pages load. IM me for any other questions.

Yes, particularly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Windows has a backup of approach records within, in order that deleting system32 will reset it into the primary time after putting in. That s why your laptop run quicker if you happen to delete system32. OK?
