I thought it was due to expectations. The higher the status of a family, the higher the expectations and the better the financial support for achievements (e.g uni, etc). It could probably have something to do with environment as well. If you grow up in a neighbourhood/family where crime and violence is all you know, you're probably going to follow suit.

Sometimes status can influence the thoughts or actions of the person they might think that because i am rich i can do this, or because i am lower i should be able to do this. whatever your "status" is will determine how you act.

they can have mental issues that drive them on... or they could just be naturally evil. in either case, beware!
