You may have introduced their eggs into your tank via a plant or water from a bag from the fish store. When on your fish, you may see that the "worms" (actually a crustacean) have a pair of knobs on the end - these are the egg sacs. Even if you pull the worms off, there may be eggs they released in the water that will reinfect your fish. You'll need to treat the tank with an anti-parasite medication (coppersafe, potassium permanganate, Clout, etc.). See this website for more info on the parasite and treatment: http://www.fish-disease.net/diseases.htm

New fish added to the tank and not quarantined may carry the parasite, as may new plants or decorations added to the tank. They usually attach to the fins or eyes of fish, and can cause weight loss and even death. They are very contagious as well. They are about a quarter to half an inch long, are red, and can be seen hanging from the fish. Most of them can be removed with tweezers, but there will most likely be larvae remaining in the tank. There are many store-bought treatments that will prevent and kill anchor worms.
