the cable modem is connected to my computer with usb, and im trying to make it so my brother's computer can get internet through my computer with ethernet. i dont have a router

You can use a crossover network cable, this is the nasty way, its undependable and you would need your PC on whenever he wants on the net. Your best bet tho is to cough up 30 bucks for a cheap router and a couple network cards.!

com ports? screw that, because he doesnt even explain where to get a cable to connect to those crazy com ports, or any of the other technical mumbo jumbo therein.

use ICS (internet connection sharing)

well... connect the two computers through the COM port (serial port-- not printer). Then go to internet connections on your computer (in my network places) and set up a connection where you are the host. On the other comp, set it up so it is the guest. then kabooom! It works!

no need to do any hanky panky stuff. its very easy

1. configure broadband in your PC
2. Give your IP Configuration 192.168.1.1 mask 255.255.255.0 and keep it in Workgroup
3. configure ur bro's PC with 192.168.1.2; 255.255.255.0 and make it Workgroup
4. connect the 2 ethernet port with crossover cable.
5. test ping
6. now use free tool like Naviscope ; http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Other-Internet-Related/Naviscope.shtml
7. config Naviscope to allow network users to use naviscope as proxy.
8. goto tools-internet options-connection-lan settings and give 192.168.1.1 port 81 in use proxy field in ur bro's PC
9. tick bypass proxy in bro's PC
10. connect internet in ur PC
11. enjoy
