Everyone alive in the world today is descended from a single woman who existed in Africa long ago; science can trace maternal mitochondrial DNA from that woman to all of us currently extant. Her progeny migrated throughout the earth. (National Geographic Society is doing a project which will trace one's early ancestors' migratory routes based upon a DNA sample.) As groups traveled upon their journeys, dominant mutations occurred within their DNA which persisted and were passed from generation to generation among the group's members, and since the original societies of human beings were tribal, the mutations experienced tended to exist within the splinter groups; thus, we are more closely related genetically now to those whose migratory routes coincided with those of our own ancestors. Asians, therefore, are all inter-related and to each other more so than they are to other populations such as Caucasians or Africans, for instance.

Homo sapiens migrated out of Africa around 60,000 years ago and spread out across Europe, Asia, and eventually to the Americas, replacing earlier species such as Neanderthal Man in Europe, Peking Man in China, and Java Man in, you guessed it, Java. After the migration out of Africa, the species diverged into various races.
