Volunteer work over the summer in your community will do a world of good to those you help and help yourself too

Don't do anything just to "look good" on a college application. But you can do something to enhance your personal profile and broaden your horizons. See about securing an internship with someone in a career you're interested in. Or find a place to volunteer that is related your a potential college major. If you're interested in the environment, see if you can volunteer with your city parks department, or with your State Department of Fish & Game. If you're interested in health care, get involved in the Junior Auxiliary at your local hospital.

You can take a college course, but I don't recommend it unless you are sincerely interested in the subject matter. Your local community college will probably offer many options this summer that will allow you to earn a few college units and still have time to volunteer or even work part time.

Many colleges are looking at a student's employment background as part of their activities. Summer might be a good time to take on a summer job, and this early, you might find something really interesting to do this summer.

Good luck!
