because the heated side (either land or water) gives off hot air and the hot air rises causing the less dense cool air to move in and this is the whole cycle if it is during the night its called a sea breeze and during the day it is called a land breeze because during the day the land heats up faster than the sea and during the night the water keeps the temperature more than the land. i actually just learned this i am in 8th grade earth science.

Unequal heating of the earth sets up what is known as a tertiary circulation. This can take the form of a Sea Breeze, Land Breeze, Valley Breeze, or Mountain Breeze. The Sea Breeze happens all the time on the Gulf coast and in Florida. Because land heats and cools 6 times faster than water, in the heat of the day the hottest air is over land, and that's where it is rising the fastest. The air from over the water will blow in towards the land and then rise, creating clouds and more often than not thunderstorms. This is why Florida gets thunderstorms almost every day during max heating. The other circulations are similar except a Land Breeze is where the winds blow towards the water, since at night the water is warmer, a Vallet breeze is where the winds blow up the mountain slopes during the day, and a Mountain Breeze is where they blow down the mountain at night.

If two adjacent land areas are heated unequally low pressure forms in one place and high pressure forms in another place resulting the flow of wind from high pressure area to low pressure area.If the two adjacent areas happen to be land and sea ,low forms over land and sea breeze starts flowing from sea during day time and land breeze blows during night due to the reversal of the above weather conditions.
