I think that is a trick question.
If you are from the south, it was decided for you (as a geographical region).
If you are from the south-west, these areas were literally cut out of the map, purchased, won or negotiated in congress over the course of the 19th century.
People didn't decide to be part of the US, people were standing on the soil when a bunch of politicians made the rules.

Because they wanted to express themselves religiously without fear of persecution. As for a reason why people want to be a part of the U.S today, it is the land of opportunity any man or woman can come here work hard and with a little bit of luck be wealthy.

I believe it is the strength in numbers thing. Individually, as states, we may be weak, but together as a nation, we are strong and people find refuge in strength.
