harry saw nicolas flamel earlier when he had a chocolate frog on the train ride to hogwarts at the start
and when he mentioned that to ron and hermione, hermione finally remembered where she read about him before - that he's the creator of the philosopher's/sorcerer's stone or the elixir of life

They did research in the school library to find out what Flamel is famous for, but they couldn't find anything. Later on Harry remembers that he saw Flamel's name on Dumbledores chocolate frog card.
