Fair - while they are in prison, it is our tax dollars paying for their accommodations. I think that we need to find a way that the prison inmates are covering their own expenses so it doesn't come out of tax dollars.
Why should they be rewarded for breaking the law? I also disagree with some that by going to jail, they should have no rights. Some people are there by making a genuine mistake and others are there because of something evil they did that forever changed someone's life. I think the punishment should fit the crime. I don't think someone becomes less than a human because he made an honest mistake and is paying for it by loosing his freedom. Child-molesters, rapists, murderers, etc. are a totally different story - regardless of how hard we are on them, it isn't hard enough.

Personally, I have no problem with prison labor. But if this is re-introduced, we need to think carefully about how it's done and make sure there is adequate oversingt. Prison labor used to be common--especially in the South. It was abolished for two very good reasons. One was that it was often abusive--beyond what could be considered appropriate, given that this is supposed to be punishment. The other is that dishonest officials and businessmen often used prosoners as a lever, not just to get cheap labor, but to force the wages of free workers down and keep them down.
So--this is not necessarily a bad idea--but it needs careful thought.

I am for it. I also think they should remove ALL workout equipment. If they want to "bulk up" let 'em do pushups! Remove ALL televisions. Put them to work a full 8 hours a day on the roads and highways, landfills and other public works..chain their legs and make them work.
No magazines or books that are not educational..no TV except on Sundays and only PBS or educational channels. Pipe music before work and a coupla hours after work - classical only. No incoming mail except for mother, father, wife (no girlfriends), children and their pastor if they have one. Outgoing mail would be restricted to those people ONLY. No phone calls at all except to those people mentioned and all calls monitored.
If they haven't graduated from High School, it should be mandatory that they attend and get either a diploma or a GED.
They should all wear pink right down to their tidy whities and their cells should be pink with pink sheets.
Outside excercise for 1 hour a day and not permitted to gather in groups larger than 4.
Make it such an unpleasant environment they don't ever want to come back.

Agree with, they have lost their rights and should work instead of just sit around doing nothing. I think that one sheriff has a great idea with the pb sandwiches and tent city and chain gang type work.
If the jails were actually a bit tougher maybe a higher percentage of criminals would turn their lives around and do something good for society.
Miss Steph I do not believe you understood the question, it was not concerning a woman going into labor and having a baby in prison.
Have a good night.

The government should work the prisoners until they drop.
By doing so you would put an end to all of the jail house killings be cause they wouldn't have the time or the energy to fight. Also remove all weight training equipment.
This would also push the former inmates to not return to the joy camps we call prisons now (thank your local liberals for that).

Fair? We did not send them to a country club - prison should have labor. I think they should do more labor. It gives prisoners a release of physical tension, it helps repay their cost of upkeep, & most important it reminds them that prison is not fun.

US claims its a human rights violation when CHina does it.
On the other hand, we make our prisoners work. WE pay them in pennies.
Frankly I think we should make them sew jeans and clean the streets, just not handle my credit card information.

I think of it this way. Once you go into prison you loose your rights so they have the right to do what every they want out of you as long as it isn't torture. So once you go to Jail you loose your rights, otherwise we would be paying criminals minimum wage.
