Ok, first here's a few thing massage doesn't do.
It doesn't stimulate blood circulation. (That's what your heart does, blood can get round your body just fine without someone pushing it round.)
It doesn't improve lymphatic drainage and help to remove toxins. This has been proven false. For a start 'toxins' is just a word created by the alternative medicine brigade for when they don't know what they're talking about. Any medical or scientific person would always be more specific.

Now here's the main physical benefit of massage.
It untwists muscle knots in your body.
Muscle get knotted and create trigger points. These can be quite painful and are probably the cause of 90% of back pain and quite a lot of other random pain in your body.
You don't have to go to a massage therapist to relieve this pain. If you are suffer from back pain, I highly recommend you put your hand into a fist and rub it up and down your back right now. Just a couple of minutes may bring you major relief.

This is the main physical benefit of massage. A lot of quacks will tell you that it has many other benefits but these are mostly nonsense.

Other benefits are not physical but mental.
Touch from another person has been shown to have health benefits. People who are hugged more as a child for example are better able to handle their emotions. Having a regular massage may well destress you. Considering the massive medical disadvantages of stress this is not something to be sniffed at. Also just the fact that you will come out with a clear head, relaxed and may feel a lot better will make the money spent worth it for many people.

I get a massage every now and then when I can afford it (they are so expensive). I'm one of those people who love back massages, etc. Personally, I thoroughly enjoy the massage while it is in progress--it is so relaxing. However, when it is over, I don't know that I experience any long-term benefits. The next day I always feel about the same as I always do. So, I just enjoy the relaxation at the time of the massage.

In a simple terms massage loosen your muscles. Our muscles keeps on expanding and contracting but at few locations muscles are either at rest or stress. when the pressure exist for longer period the cells tends to loose it's elasticity. and you experience pain. Through massage pressure is applied so that the blood flow gain momentum and your body cells get reactivate.
