Here's a link to a page that gives a synopsis about the book.

Whether it's appropriate for a 12 year old depends on the maturity of the child. A child in the book is the victim of a violent act (of a sexual nature) by another child.

Personally, I think it's a terrific book, but a bit too old for a 12 year old. 15-16 year old would be a better age for this book.

first off it is not a book for a 12 yr ol....it is about two boys growing up in kabul, and then the taliban move in and turn everything upside down....throughout the book there are very disturbing scenes that is beyond a 12 yrd old....read it for yourself and u will c what im talking about........it is an excellent read for someone who understands the afghanistan history and for those who dont...again do not let him read it just yet....u read it first

It is a poorly-written book: the characters are trite, the plot is meandering and pointless, the main character is shallow all his life and never develops, the setting misses everything that is interesting and real about Kabul and Afghanistan, and the child rape is gratuitous and tiresome because it is so predictable - so the book is not appropriate for a 12-year-old nor for anyone who appreciates good writing.
