I HATE the new rules. I have watched and played my whole life (47), they have put so much power in the referees hands that the players are now called for the smallest little thing. This leads to pent up emotions and late hits...fights cost the players $30K....so they look for other ways....and the refs call everything....there use to be a time when the referees "put away their whistle and let them play". Now the refs decide every game.....not for me....

The problem now is that in an effort to "call anything and everything" they end up calling many small things that really don't affect the game and that many players may be doing but the 4 refs on the the ice aren't able to see or call. If they really did call every single thing (like say in baseball) or in football (well they call everything except holding) then it would change the whole pace of the game and the way it is played and it would be much less exciting. Apparently the refs hate Tampa Bay because one player got a 3 game suspension for flipping off the ref. In the 15 years that I have been a hockey fan I have noticed that pretty much every player who is called for anything would like to flip off the ref and many yell and scream once they are in the box. I can remember in the late 1990's when you had to either hit someone outside after play had been stopped or put another player in the hospital to be suspended from a game.

This is actually a statement with a question mark after it.
I believe the NHL has asked far too much of its officials over the past two years. If they were to review every game they wouldn't have a problem because officials are supposed to call anything even questionable, but since last year I think refs are trying not to do so, after criticizm from players coaches, etc.
Yet we seem to find them somewhere in the middle again. There is much inconsistence in the strictness of officials from game to game (which seems to be consistent in itself).
We need to see some consistence in the way games are officiated. Either call anything questionable, or let them play. I say let 'em play.

I don't think it is all on the Refs. Some of them have been around a long time. The only thing we can ask for is consistency and that has been my complaint this season. There are some games where they let them play and some games where a cross look gets you a meanie penalty.
That being said I think there needs to be something set and you ******* at the league office, just because you want more scoring for casual fans I understand, but don't piss off your current fan base. Oh wait too late.
Can nobody else appreciate a well defended and goaltended game? Honestly . . .

The refs need to be more consistent, Has anyone else noticed the "make up penalties" Like a ref missed a call for tripping, gets booed then calls like the most pathetic little hold. Like he's trying to make up for missing the legitimate call.

100% agree with you buddy! Columbus fans have a theory that NHL refs hate our GM so they screw us out of goals. One time (true story), both teams had a player in the box, and we got an extra penalty on top of that, so other team scores on PP and one of our guys comes out of the box. The ref told him to go back and stay in there. The Columbus players were arguing with the Refs telling them they were wrong and their come back was... no joke.... "It's a new rule." I kid you not folks.

...and so is your punctuation. I think that the officiating is inconsistent, but the fact of the matter is 4 guys can't see every little thing that happens on the ice. If anyone knows how it feels to have your team utterly screwed by poor officiating, it's Sabres fans. I believe that the bias went toward Dallas that day, as well (and you KNOW what I'm talking about!)

It's easy to blame the refs. Try being one and you'll see things differently. You don't get an instant replay to make all your calls.
Been there. Glad I don't do it anymore.
