This question is for those of you in your 20's who are working and now living alone after high school or college. I just got hired for my first full-time position at a company 15 minutes from my parent's home. My parents and I have no problem with me staying with them until I get a few paychecks to build up my now empty savings account. I don't want to overstay my welcome or take advantage of their kindness. How long do you think I should wait before moving into my first apartment?

You have some thing that a lot of people do not have. A great relationship with your parents.

I would stay there as long as possible and offer to pay some rent. If they do not accept any rent from you buy groceries, pay the light bill or any thing else that lets them know you appreciate them and their kindness.

While you are there, start saving your money and get your self financially fit. Pay off any and all debt. Your goal should be to live off 75% of your pay. The other 25% should go into savings (10%) and your 401K (15%).

Getting started off on the right foot is not hard, but is important.

Good luck

As long as you are welcome and contributing to the household - wait until you are comfortable. There is no set time. Discuss this with your parents - you sound as if you have your priorities in order (you can always offer to pay rent). Given your respectful attitude, I doubt that your parents would ever feel as though you are taking advantage or overstaying your welcome.

I moved out at 16, after graduating from high school. What other people do has little bearing on your own situation!

if you are paying your parents board and get along with them okay, why not make the most of it and stay there and save as long as you can, then when you move out you can buy a house instead of rent.
i got a job at 17, moved out at 18, moved back in at 19, in and out for a while and now am 22 and renting still with an almost 2 year old girl.. i so wish i had stayed home and saved first so i could be paying off my own house instead of someone i dont even know's.

they are your parents, they wont hate u for staying there too long, it might get annoying but i would stay there as long as possible, cause u might think u got everything planned out, and then u get hit with another obstacle. overstay your welcome as long as possible
