a catylized primer DOES PROTECT the metal underneath!! thats why you prime water borne does not its water based and that does absorbe water hence why you spray a catylized clear coat over a water based color. if you use a good catylized primer you can drive around for sevral years with it it will last and heck ya you can clear over that.
you need to sand it with a 400 -800 grit (320 can leave marks that you have to polish out) you get the mechanical and the chemical (chain bond which is the harders in the clear and the primer forming a bond and becoming 1) most brands of paint have whats called a mat clear or mat finish. this is that dull look your wanting. if you see rust marks in your primer this is from the rust eating the metal from the backside of the panel. the real question is how long do you plan on keep this car. if its just for fun look cool for a couple years just prime that maybe take some 800 grit paper too it. it gives it a decent effect. if your going to keep this for more then a couple years if at the very least get a mat finsh on it this is just so have a little more protection from the elements and road debri. primer alone doesnt have the same uv protection that a clear has. good primers and paints sikkens, dupont, glaserate, ppg, valspar is decent (they own house of kolours and are interchangable) i personally would not touch diamont (just a person oppinion) if money is a problem napa paint isnt bad, it isnt good but its not bad. and valspar i think you get the most for your buck.

Primer doesn't hold up for a very long time. Your liking the flat paint finish black primer gives you. You do know they sell a flat car paint for just occasions for the non gloss finish.

i own a repair shop and i tell you what you can do,because i have done it before,i used black primer and clear coated it,and got the nicest color of black you ever saw on any car,it was more like a deep blue, and looked really well, and don't cost all that much to do either, but this is something to think about ,i have done it several times since then, and every time i do it it still comes out good, most people think its a special kind of base clear when they see it,i haven't told them any difference yet,and may never tell them, good luck hope this helps.

Primer does not protect the metal underneath against rust. It absorbs water rather than repels it.

The advantage would be you wouldn't have to wax the vehicle. The disadvantage would be you'd look like a kid with a black primer'd car.
