I've been struggling on these two algebra problems for hours. They are word problems and I'm completely lost. If you could help with atleast one of the solutions (work included) that would be awesome =D.

1. Charly Change has $13 in nickels and quarters. Altogether he has 96 coins. How may of each coin does he have? Use the variables n and q and write a system of equations that could be used to solve this problem. Do not Solve the equations.


2. In 1990 a stamp for a first-class letter cost 35 cents and a stamp for a postcard cost 20 cents. Paula Penpal spent $5.00 for 19 stamps. How many of each kind did she buy?

1. Take n and q as the number of nickels and quarters respectively.

n + q= 96
5n + 25q= 1300

2. Take L as number of letter stamps and P as postcard stamps.

L+P=19 [1]
35L +20P= 500 [2]
[1] x 35
=35L + 35P= 665 [3]
[3] - [2]
15P= 165
P= 11, L= 8
