from Happy Days - when Fonzie Jumped over a shark tank on his motorcycle. It was totally ridiculous and was the beginning of the end for that show. The phrase has come do signify anything which was once good but is now on the decline.

Its when TV show goes bad. Like when they make a drastic plot twist or write out a character [i.e. That 70's Show losing Eric & Kelso] that turns many fans away from the show. Its a sign that the shows about to end.

I have never jumped the shark hah.
