I recommend a great book by author, Guy Ogilvy called "The Alchemist's Kitchen: Extraordinary potions and curious notions." ISBN-10: 0-8027-1540-0 or 13: 978-0-8027-1540-1 You'll learn what an alchemist is, and even get a few real alchemical recipes. Some of these recipes actually work, others are impossible, and a handful are toxic. Be wise. This book is also available through inter-library loan, or, you can purchase it for $10.00.

Basically a person who believes that changes can be made to the materials of the world by magic. They looked for a philosophers stone that would convert base metals to gold and other techniques for conversion of cheap stuff to valuable stuff. Along the way they discovered some properties that led to modern chemistry.

During the Dark Ages and Middle Ages, men usually called "wizards" attempted to transform base metals (like tin, lead, nickel) into more precious metals like silver, gold and platinum through various means usally involving smelting (purifing base metals) or forming compound metals (brass, bronze are just a few). They never succeeded as it requires changing the entire molecular structure of the base metal. even today while theoritically possible, its still not done due to cost.
