Does it mean it can be erased and rewritten 4 times of is it "4x drive speed"?

4X is an approximate BURN speed. The original CD burners burned really slow. A full CD might have taken almost an hour. So a 4X speed CD-RW will take under 15 minutes.

Speed isn't everything. If you have a brand new 24X CD Burner, it is best to BACK OFF from the top rated burn speed. You see, at 24X, it might burn in a minute or two, but backing off to 8X will burn much more reliably in just 4 or 5 minutes. The wait is worth it.

A typical CD-RW media can be burned and erased about dozen times.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

It has a two fold meaning. First it means that the drive is capable of writing data at the rate 4 times faster then the reference standard ( 1(x = rpm of the drive) It also means the rate that the disk can be written to. If you have a blank disk that is 4x and a 16x drive yo can only write to the disk at 4x speed maybe a little more but 4x is what the disk was tested at. Well that a bit simplified but I hope that answers your question.

First, it means that it is old.

Basically it means that it is 4 times faster than the original base-line speed. A 4x speed rated drive ought to transfer data at about 600 kilobytes a second to a -RW disk.

Rewritable CD-RW disks come in various 'speed ratings' that match up with different drive speeds. Older drives can use 1x -4x disks, newer drives need disks rated for them.

Not all drives can write 4x disks, if they are rated faster, unless you can tell it to go slow enough for the disk media itself.

Way back in the ancient days, the original CD-ROM drives spun at the same speed as audio CDs. The data transfer rate was about 150 kilobytes a second. It was slow, but CDs held a lot of data compared to floppy disks.

People didn't like the slow load times for the data, so faster drives were developed over time.
There were CD-ROM drive speeds from 1.5x, 2x - 52x, and faster. CD-RW drive speeds dropped back to dismally slow speeds when they first came out, but people liked to be able to write their own CDs, so they put up with the slow speeds for a while.

DVD drives started out from scratch again, with speeds the same as DVD movie players, and got faster as things improved.

The '4x' is a reference to the speed of the first cdrom drives. Your cdrom drive is 4 times faster than the first ones ever marketed. At the moment even 32x is considered slow.

It is the speed for writing the data on a CD.

You can also find 4x, 8x, 16x, 32x, .... Those the speed of the CD writable on data. If you write the data on a re-writable disc it is better to select 4x speed this speed protects the CD in most cases.

Hi. It means that the CD can be written at 4 times the normal read speed. Pretty slow by 2007 standards.

it is the speed of burning your cd. 4x is rather slow and takes longer than 16x. So it is better to use a 16x if your burner will accept them.
