They know what to say to make me feel better when I'm down.
They refrain from judgment.
They are there when I need them.
They know me better than I know myself at times, at the most critical times.
They are who I want to call first when I feel I'm in crisis or crises. And they stop everything to allay(sp?) my fears and to mend my feelings.

What criteria? Plain reason and simple intuition.

If all else fails, they know the answer to the meaning of life and the universe and everything is 42, or in a pinch: moon.

My best friend is always there to listen and does not judge even though she may have her own opinion. She does not judge me for my opinions. We both live our own lives but compliment each other as friends. We make time to go out and do something whether it is to eat or just to see a movie. We talk on the phone and try to listen or help lift up each other spirits. Who else would drive 2 hours to my mothers funeral when she never met my mother? Actually, I have a few of them......Just a handful is all I need. They are wonderful people.

A best friend is closer than your sister or brother. Some one who is loyal, trustworthy and dependable. Some one you can share your most precious inner secrets with and rest assured they will not let the secret go beyond you and her/him. Some one who laughs with you when you are happy and cries with you when you are sad. Some one who is always there for you, to pick you up when you fall. Some one who would not turn their back on you if you make a mistake, but instead help you through it.

Besides my husband, my best friend and I met when we were 4 years old. We had similar family problems that bonded us, and are very like-minded and intuitive towards each other too. We are different enough to keep it interesting. We can go long periods of time without talking when life gets busy and pick up right where we left off.

Best friend love one another like they love themselves. They are not hurtful, vengeful or jealous. They hurt when you hurt, not mean spirited, do not argue or fight. Enjoy each other's company. Best friends have your back. You laugh a lot when you are together, do not use you or take advantage of your kindest. They do not take more than they give. Thoughful, caring, all that kind of stuff. You will know when you have one or not trust your gut. Ask God to show you.

Kindest regards-
Vicky

Most people are friends because of common interests. Sometimes the friendship grows and becomes a lifelong friendship. Other time, interests change; then friends form new friendships and for the most part, abandon the old ones.

Must:
-Be open to honest communication, even if difficult; preferably can initiate tough conversations.
-Be thoughtful and giving. Acknowledges special times in my life and accepts that I acknowledge times in their life.
-Be a deep thinker. I generally don't like talking about the new girl's "ugly shoes" or the latest thing on MTV. I don't need to talk philosophy all the time, but we should be able to at least talk about our thoughts, feelings, perceptions, wishes, and ways of life.
-Be willing to help me out and accept my help.
-Remember (generally) important things; take an interest in my life.
-Not be the partying type. Like to go on adventures together (particularly in nature), but not clubbing or the bar scene.
-Be clean-cut/somewhat wholesome. They don't have to be a saint or uptight, but they should be somewhat serious, into doing the ethical thing, not into trouble.
-On the other hand---willing to speak up against injustice, fights for the underdog. Is not passive-aggressive.
-A loving person. Does not have enemies or hold grudges, generally speaking (no one is perfect).

I don't believe in "official" best friends. Your best friend is whoever you happen to be hanging out with the most at the particular time. If you get into the mindset of one person being your official best friend, it will hurt your ability to meet new people and make friends with them. This is very common in middle schools, and sometimes in high schools too, but usually after that age people grow out of it.
