and the usefulness of the dissection?

I think they are necessary in order to learn about the inner anatomy of animals. Pictures will only provide a limited idea of what the innards look like, connect and function.

Why? Are you opposed? If so, why?
I hated doing discetion in school, but I did learn from it.

There is nothing like the real thing when taking stuff apart to see what's inside... it is a very useful teaching tool, if the intent is to know what is going on inside the animal.

The ethical question is just that- a question of personal ethics and morality. I find it inconsistent for a person wearing leather shoes with hamburger on his breath to say "I don't believe in vivisection"

As a science teacher, I also found that this was one of those issues that quickly became more about student empowerment than science, so I always included it in a list of equal options... write a research paper OR make a model of xxxx OR dissect a whatever...

As a student I loved dissection time, because I could raise a little he|| with Mrs. Boyers (whom I still can't stand).

In college I cut everything from an earthworm to a cadaver (or two), the latter of which kinda freaked me out, but I have resolved the ethical/moral questions for me- and wouldn't claim to be able to do the same for you.

I do not see the point of dissecting animals unless you are going to be a vet, I have had to do dissections of a cat in college, did not help me one bit.

I have worked on a cadaver...that is educational if you are going into healthcare.

I think that they should have a model of the animal, or maybe only one animal per group so that not as many have to be killed. But once they're dead, they're dead. I don't think that the dissection of the *asleep* ones is very humane, though.

It's fine if they're dead.
It's quite useful,.. images and illustrations can't really represent the real thing,..
