Luau! Get the palm trees, seagulls, drinks with little umbrellas. There MUST be water. For a Luau it can be a pool. It doesn't matter if your not near a beach, Luau is better near a pool anyway! Don't forget the watermelon bowl! Flip Flops required!

The bonfire idea is so good, but be careful because it is illegal on most beaches in LA and not only will your party get shut down you will end up with a great big fine. That's a surefire buzz kill. I think you can bonfire on Dockweiler beach, but check with the lifeguards. If you saunter up to a lifeguard while he/she is working they will give you more "casual" answers than if you call LIfeguard headquarters.
And I see no reason why you can't combine all your possible themes and have a "Magnum PI/Miami Vice Crazy80's Hawaiian Hula Beach Party Summer Break '07" cuz that sounds kinda crazy fun. Aloha!

Hi.
You seem to be thinking of a warm weather Northern hemisphere summer party.
So you need a hot setting--jungle, tropic island, beach,
indoor discotheque, desert, etc.
I've given three Hawaiian parties, because they're fun and easy to "accessorize", with plastic leis or flowers, appropriate music,, etc.
So my favorite idea would be a summer break party. You could pick out and play music everybody liked and do what you couldn't do during school--dance, dress up in retro clothes, do "Beat the Clock" stunts to win prizes in a challenge, and eat whatever was most special to you--pizza, or fried chicken and interesting drinks like sun tea, carbonated drinks etc.

When I was a single mom in the military in the 1980's we would have some wonderful summer theme parties. One time we had a genuine Hawaiian luau. Everyone brought a potluck dish...vegetarian and plenty of tofu to grill. (Our friends were vegetarians and vegans but your meat-eating friends would also love a grilling time.) Everyone went to the local thrift store the week before and bought the loudest Hawaiian shirt they could find. Of the 20 friends who came and their kids, ALL the shirts could have won the contest I had for the gaudiest shirt! We had Hawaiian music, watched Elvis Presley's "Blue Hawaii" on the VCR and even bobbed for apples.
Another fun one we had was "Come as you first get up in the morning" party. Everyone came in pajamas and robes except one of my buds who came in a flesh colored leotard and barefoot (it was a guy). He sleeps nude and walks around nude until it's time to get ready for work! We had breakfast foods (potluck, again) even though the party started at 7:00 p.m. We drank fuzzy coffee, watched that morning's "Good Morning America" show and pretended to gossip. The person who was able to gossip and drink coffee the best (like a real bimbo in the morning) won a new coffeemaker! It was a hoot!
Another good one was "Come as a used car salesman/woman" party. Everyone came with plaid shorts, plaid shirts, plaid ties and some even wore plaid shoes and plaid suit coats. The winner of the best car salesperson award (a gift certificate to Starbuck's) wore horribly contrasting plaid shorts, shirt, tie, shoes and hat! SHE was arresting to look at! We watched the worst car sales ads I had taped on TV and played charades while eating potluck "junk vegetarian food" (not really unhealthy...soy hotdogs, vegan macaroni salads, etc.)
Hope this gives you some ideas, dear! Have a great time!

toga, I would say.
but I think the theme of the 80's is cool too. It hasn't been done as much as the others. It shows that the party is slightly unique. The others are pretty much the same thing, it seems you want a beach type party.

Do a beach party! Those are always fun. Served like many tropical drinks such as ice tea with lemon, or pina coladas! =) If you can even try having it on the beach with a bonfire..and stuff!
