Santa Monica would be the closest beach to Sherman Oaks. The second closest would be Malibu. Both are nice beaches. Santa Monica has a amusement park type thing going on on it's pier. Hope this helps!
Once you click on the link, hit the "5" so you get a further out view, you can see what beaches are there.

Sherman Oaks is close to many beaches. And since 2 freeways run thru Sherman Oaks, you have several choices. All beaches in the Los Angeles county area do not allow Alcoholic beverages or open fires. I don't know what kind of parties you are thinking of throwing but I thought I should let you know. The closest beach to you is Santa Monica beach. It has a big long uninterupted beach that connects with other beaches like Venice to the south and Sunset beach to the north. It has a pier with many stores and arcade. And of course, places where you can buy Beers and other kinds of adult drinks. Santa Monica provides beach parking but is costly, as is all beach parking in Los Angeles County. to get to S.M. Beach from Sherman Oaks. Take 405 South to 10 West. Exit Lincoln Bl. and turn left. Go to Pico Bl. and turn Right. Go to the end and you will see a street called Appian way. Turn right and you will see different locations for parking. this is the Santa Monica pier area. There are other choices along the beach to park but this is just the easiest way for me to explain how to get there. If you are adventurous, You can travel south along Ocean Bl. Please bring a map. You will enjoy yourself very much just driving around. If you are in to late night fun please travel with several people in the Venice area. stay away from the dark streets.
Ventura County Beaches are north on the 101. They are distant but I think that they allow open fires and alcoholic drinks. But I do not know for sure. Take 101 north to Kanan Rd. Turn left and drive until you get to Pacific Coast Highway. turn right. Travel until you see the Ventura/Los Angeles County line. There are many beautiful beaches along this part of L.A. county. Zuma beach is an awesome beach, but you have to pay attention on arrival to it because the exit is easy to pass. Anyway, the key word is adventurous. Have fun.

Santa Monica is pretty cool.. the beach isn't the cleanest in the whole world, and there's a bit of seaweed, but the pier is a cool feature. The ferris wheel is cool as well..
