Does it depend on the model type, or is there actually a price I should be expecting? And yes, I know it's below the minimum standard for units, but I don't want to get a new unit, just replace the compressor.

It would be about half the cost of a new unit to have it installed.Depending on the age of the unit usually around a 10 year warranty on the compressor. But if older than that usually better to just replace the whole thing. So check your warranty the compressor might be under warranty but the installation would not be covered.

Some compressors are no longer available or are more expensive because they rarely made by the manufacturer. The time spent changing out a compressor is pretty long. It's a hard task. I wouldn't recommend putting a new compressor in a unit over 12~15 years old. Putting a compressor in an older unit strains the rest of the system. Depending on the availability, I wouldn't be surprised if a compressor changeout is $800~$1000.

bigger the compressor more the price. 500 and up. only guaranteed one year. dont think you should replace. you taking a long shot how long comp will hold up. usually something else caused the compressor to go out. unless unit over 8 years old.

I don't believe there are any 10 seer compressors left after the DOE/EPA law changes in January 2006.
