I have a time-sensitive letter to send to a Member of Parliament. How can I best ensure that my letter gets read quickly? If I send it by courier, is it more likely to be get put on the top of the pile? Should I address it to a particular person at that governmental office? Should I initial the outside of the envelope?

Don't hold your breath, I sent a letter about my tax credit overpayment to Tony Blair and guess what it was passed on and passed on, until someone sent me a letter stating it would take 5 to 6 weeks to look into my problem, and surprise ,surprise 3 days later I got a letter back saying they couldn't help me, to me no one was bothered to look at my letter that's why I'm saying don't expect a result off the crooks in Parliament.( also I sent a E-Mail direct to Tony Blair's office and no reply) .Sorry for being disheartening ,I hope you have better luck than I did, all the best .Fred

If you can, hand deliver it. Otherwise if you send it, do it by certified mail, and yes, address it to a specific person. That way it becomes more personal and gets the reader's attention vs some junkmail.

Heck, you can even ask for a phone call or mailed reply so that the person can let you know that he or she received it.

I actually went to my MP's website and emailed him direct. I was very surprised to get a personal responce and yesterday I received a letter from the House of Commons with a more detailed reply.

Try that.

Send it registered mail which would require a signiture .
Most MP's or even MPP's dont read there own mail unless its delivered to their place of residence .
Mark it urgent and then hope that the RCMP don't think its something dangerous .
for a joke put perfume all over it and he will open it before his wife see's it ... ( im kidding )

A ruse I use with some success is to type; "In Reply" in red ink just above the address.

And no matter my letter is about I always begin such letters,

'Dear ....
Futher to our earlier correspondence....

It works for me.

Simply address to the MP by name at the House of Commons, Westminster, SW1. It will be delivered and read. You can also find the MP's website and email him/her there. Also, you can drop a note down the shoot at his party HQ website too.
