Unfortunately, all of the other answers here are incorrect. Not because they don't know - but, because they don't fully understand your question.
The reason you see style a lot is because myspace moderators recently added additional filters to the servers. There have been a lot of users who are very proficient with XHTML and CSS that have been using inline styles to spam forums and groups.
For example, the dreaded white-page where a post seems to be 'whited out'. The user does this by typing in:
into his post, then the screen is blank.
A lot of screwy things can also be done to forum posts by using inline styles on table tags. Therefore, the myspace mods have created a filter where any time the word 'style' is typed, it will be surrounded by two
tags. This effectively keeps the styling from being applied, thus eliminating the annoyance of the spammers.
Unfortunately, this also means that legitimate users of the coding must revert back to old standard HTML to style their posts instead of using Inline styles. And it becomes a real hassle when attempting to explain to users to use style tags, because it ends up looking like this:
[Add
style tags to your 'About Me' section like this:
<
style type="text/css">
table, td {background: transparent;}
style>]

I've never seen that before. You are not even supposed to see it if it's code. But, this is MySpace we're talking about. If you're trying to customize your own MySpace profile, try http://profilefreebies.com I've never seen the tag when I downloaded layouts from them, though. So, maybe it's just the official MySpace tag. Dunno.

It's what happens when people try to install layouts, or delete layouts, but aren't entirely successful, so they leave remnants of the layout codes on their profile.
Because it's incomplete, it just spits out garble basically. So people are trying to get layouts onto their profile from myspace resource websites like http://www.snazzyspace.com http://www.skaarn.com but aren't doing it properly.
