A variation on the previous answer: Athens wouldn't work unless it had those slaves; today that's the working class.

And Athens wasn't a true democracy, as only wealthy Athenians could achieve power. Today's U.S. is an oligarchy with a veneer of democracy.

Besides the structure of government perhaps the self-centered politicians whose main interest is their reelection and lining their pockets.
