I was wondering how important the red night light is to have in. My apartment is kept around 80C constant, and I had read somewhere that snakes like a difference between the day time and the nighttime so that their body could regulate between the two. With the daylight in it stays at 82-84C and with the night light it goes down to 80-81C. But if I don't turn on any light, it seems to hit 79 or even 78 sometimes, depending on heating in my apartment. I was wondering if this would have any effects on the corn snake, although he's acting normally now and has been without the night light for 2 months now.

Thanks in advance!

Lighting on snakes makes no difference to their health or well being.. Temperature does.. you are keeping your Corn Snake at an optimal temperature and it will do just fine with no additional lighting except for your personal viewing. That is one of the "perks" to having a snake ... they get all their bodily requirements from the whole animals they eat and only require water for hydration.

most people strongly recommend an over head heat source or at least a good under tank heater. Your animal needs to be able to thermo regulate, which means if it gets to hot or to cool it can go to a warm side or a cool side. after a snake eats its natural for it to want to go to a warmer side to aide in digestion (warmer temps + digest faster) its a natural occurrence, obviously its more difficult to flee if need be on a full belly, so the faster they digest the quicker and safer they will be. so if your room stays a constant temp with no other heat source, your pet will not be able to make a choice on warmer or cooler sides, because that choice is non existent

I have a 5ft Amel Corn. I have a basking light for the daytime and I just shut it off at night. My house is at 70 degrees and I have never had a problem. The temps can be lower at night so don't worry.

some snakes need lights, corns do not. they're nocturnal.
you can take the light off completely, just get an undertank heater(not a hot rock) for one side of the tank, add a hide, so there's one on the warm side and one on the cool.
