I would say that Ares is generally one of the best file sharing programs out there for music; I use it all the time. Try it as an alternative to LimeWire.
You can download Ares here: http://aresgalaxy.sourceforge.net/

Hope that helps!

www.purevolume.com
I don't know if it qualifies as a search engine, but they have tons of music. Some you can only listen to but a lot of it you can download, all for free. Plus they have links to the artists websites, if that matters. They have professional and indie artists, signed and unsigned. I have gotten tons off of that site. If you are willing to hunt around for the song you want (if you know exactly what you want) try www.altavista.com and click on the audio tab. Some of the links that come up will be garbage but most of the time if you are willing to spend some time looking you can find an actual version of the song you want. Also, try going to different record company websites. A lot of them offer some free downloads to promote the artists and hopefully get people hooked. As far as free downloads, that is all I've found so far that offer no strings attached. Hope this helps.
