I WAS one of those kids on the dog looking leashes. (Should I be admitting this in public? ^_^)
My parents did it because I was one of those mischief kids that would run away while their back was turned and end up under the clothing wrack or something. They literally couldn't keep me still and I was in the terrible two's and wouldn't listen, so they bought a leash.
Granted, it was the early 80's, and it was a funky velcro leash with primary colors, and not a full-scale kiddy harness... but, yeah.

LOL.....I was one of those parents.
I had a 5 year old, a 3 year old, and a newborn. My 3 year old was a child who loved to "explore". One minute he is right beside you and so good and the next moment he is GONE. Trying to find him with a 5 year old and a newborn was quite an experience. He wasn't really being bad...he was easily attracted to things. Colors, sounds, smells could get his attention in a New York second, LOL. I finally resorted to the "harness/leash" idea and it worked WONDERFUL. It allowed him the "freedom" of being a "big boy" and not having to sit in the buggy....but it also gave me that "peace that passes all understanding" knowing he was safe. I could do my grocery shopping without worrying about him "escaping" and running in front of an on coming car or getting lost in the store with the perverts and predators. I only had to use it for a short while. He is now a Master Sargent in the United States Army and he laughs about his having to be on the "leash". It is another delightful memory in life. So don't worry if you have to resort to it. :o)

i tried it when shopping downtown and riding the rail. i had packages and i thot this would keep him from running off and getting hurt or kidnapped. but he hated it and actually tried to drag me out in the street with him to show his anger!
i took it off and never used it again.
i also tried the walkie talkies in the mall. how embarrassing was it to realize that it was my kid clicking on the most used channel and saying profanities. Ppl all over the mall were getting upset.
he got grounded. we never used the walkie talkies again.
