Those are there so that automated processes cannot fillout a registration. This is done to keep "bots" from filling out profiles, which would happen rather quickly, and they would have to be deleted, take for example myspace, if bots were to make a bunch of profiles ( i do mean a bunch) it could possibly cause server storage issues. Of course this would take a ton of profiles, but with automated bots filling out forms 24/7 from all over the world, it wouldnt take long. I hope I explained that ok.

Those things are actually a security feature used to protect the website. Some people, for many reasons, like creating several hundred aim, or yahoo accounts to do bad things. What these guys do is they make programs that can fill out these registration forms instantly, and create hundreds of aim, or yahoo accounts in less than a few seconds.

These weird blurry letters make it impossible for people to write these hacker programs. It's easy to make a program to fill out a registration form. But writing a program to read these blurry letters is impossible. Only a human being can read those fuzzy letters to complete the aim registration process.

Anyway, they don't t stop people from creating multiple aim, or yahoo accounts, but they sure do slow them down, and they prevent people from launching denial of service attacks on the aim, and yahoo servers.

Hope that helps.

This is to ensure that the registration is not automatic, and an individual is trying to register. It is a security feature.
