Yeah and they will also charge a bounced check fee for the bad check you deposited and bounced check fees for all the bad checks you wrote on that check that bounced...

By the way...Don't take checks from buyers on ebay either (esp. if they write a check for too much money)...they bounce them up to 3 WEEKS after you deposit them...and if you sent them the difference...oh well...

A similar thing happened to my husband and I... we got a letter in the mail that said he'd won some kind of lottery. They were going to send a check for... I think it ws $5k, and we were to get a money order for part of that amount, and send it back as some kind of processing fee...

We deposited the check into our saving account, but were told that there was a 5-day (or was it a 10-day?) hold on the funds.... yeah, it never cleared, and our bank actually tried to close both our savings and our checking accounts!!!

When you went to deposit the check, did the teller say anything to you about the check? If there was something funny about the check (like ours- it didn't have their bank name/address printed above the memo line), he/she should have informed you that it was suspicious, or that there was a hold on the funds till the check cleared... something!

No, this isn't a federal crime- you're the victim, but I'd suggest you call your bank, talk to them, see if there's any way that you and your bank can work this out that will still allow you to afford to live.

And next time- don't spend the money till the check has cleared!!!

This was a scam that has been used on a lot of people. You need to go into the bank WITH any documentation you have from the sender of the check and talk to them about your situation. You will probably need to pay the bank back the money because they are not responsible for your mistakes, but they will probably work with you on it. The bank will probably report the fraud to the FBI on behalf of you, but if they don't, you need to call your local FBI office and report it. NEVER CASH CHECKS FROM SOMEONE YOU DONT KNOW, and certainly don't spend the money before the check has cleared. I'm also guessing that the check was either a complete fake or it originated outside of the US? Good luck with your problem and follow any advice the bank gives you.

u wont go to jail but u'll have to pay the money. the bank will tell u to return all the stuff u bought (if they are returnable) and give the bank the rest of the money. then they'll work out a plan with you to see how u kan pay off the bills.
note: when u receive letters in the mail saying that ur a winner first go to the bank and check to see if the check is valid. something like this seems to good to be true

You'll never see that money again. Of all the internet scams, that is one of the more clever. I also got that check in the mail. It looks SO REAL! So believable. The only reason I didn't fall for it, was my husband is not now, or has never been, a sucker.

I totally understand why you fell for it though. I would have too. You won't go to jail because the scam is much more known about now.

WOW that really really sucks.... the bank might work with you on it but if not then the bank will go after you for the money, it could go to court, the bank can also close your account and take what is ever left in there towards what ever you own them, which means that you will have a VERY VERY hard time opening or evening getting another account with another bank because of this....if i were you, i would contact a lawyer who gives free consultations and ask for their advice and any legal action that the bank can take.

hope everything works out for you....

You've been scammed..If you still have the envelope where the check came from and if it has an address keep it...Take legal action and explain to your bank..they might work out a payment plan....the only crime you have commited is believing in something that isn't true and trusting in whoever sent you the check.

The bank will probably roll what you owe them into a personal loan. They usually take a little pity on the colossally stupid. And BTW, what you were doing is stealing from the co. that wrote you the check. By cashing it, you entered into a contract to send them the money. You decided to keep it instead. That's stealing (from a crook, but still stealing).

What ye sew, so shall ye reap!

This is a well known scam...I'm surprised that you haven't herd of this before. Usually involves a bogus certified check. You need to go to the cops and report what happened....The person that mailed you the check committed a federal crime, although you shouldn't have cashed it.

good luck

You were being scammed by a scammer, the check was never valid.
You should call your bank and see if they will work with you on a payment plan.
