i have just been diagnosed as having a weak spot in the retina of my left eye. the eye doctor says it could become detached and to let him know if i ever see "floaters" is there anything to prevent this weak spot from having my retina detach or do i just have to hope it doesnt happen?

Depending on where the weak spot is sometimes the doctor can use a laser to "spot weld" around the weak spot to help prevent a tear or detachment. This is usually only done if the spot is in the periphery of the retina. Another sign that should be reported is any flashes of light which is also a sign of detachment of the retina. If you have only seen a general ophthamologist I would suggest a consultation with a vitro-retinal specialist who would specialize in such issues.

Try to avoid serious head trauma... but since you probably already do that (like most of us), the real answer is not much... just be aware that heavy duty contact sports can detach a retina (rare, even for you, but possible), and severe blows to the head can do it too. Just be a little more aware of situations that have the possibility of getting your head whacked...

Note... You will always have some "floaters" in your eyes... these are the little strings of goo that were left over from the trauma of birth. What the eye doc meant was if you see an increase (it will usually be fairly dramatic) in the number of those little guys. Most people tend to notice floaters more when looking at bright light colored backgrounds (like the sky on a clear day).

Do a google on "detached retina" for more info...

That is why is want you to report floaters, it is a sign of a disorder.

Then he can treat you BEFORE it is too late.

I thought they did surgery for that, if needed. Ask your doc if you will need surgery.
